NCC rejects Airtel’s $273.6m offer for a 5G license. One of Nigeria’s top telecommunication companies is set to launch its 5G network. However the Nigerian Communications Commission has declined the request proposed by the second largest telecom in Nigeria [Airtel] .
Airtel proposed for a spot of the 3.5GHz spectrum at $273.6 million, this was the same price that it was sold to MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications .

However the proposal to receive a slot by Airtel at the last auction after bidding $270m was not successful. Meanwhile MTN and Amagba had both submitted bids of $273.60 million, and they have improved their offer and are requesting that it be given the slot.
Ubale Maska, the Executive Commissioner of NCC has responded through the Technical services saying “our reserve price was set after necessary benchmarking. We arrived at some idea of what the price should be.
He also went ahead to say that the auction determined what the actual price should be. If we have only one party interested that will determine the price. He also went ahead to say that the reserve price throws up a higher price, that new price becomes the new price.
The current situation is that Airtel users will have to wait a little longer to start enjoying 5G benefits that MTN users have been enjoying for a while now.
